If you are appalled by acts of animal cruelty you might like to take a minute to sign this petition to DEFRA about the use of bolt guns to destroy Greyhounds. The petition is asking for DEFRA to ban the practise that allows an untrained, and apparently uncaring Greyhound owner, to use a bolt gun on their dog....
Truly unbelievable...
Here is the LINK to the petition
Thanks for posting this link Lesley, I don't think that petitions have a lot of power but it's got to be worth a try.
ReplyDeleteI had hoped that the wanton and inhumane destruction of retired greyhounds had stopped after that awful case a few years ago but maybe that was just wishful thinking :-(
Luckily ours are living the life of luxury that they deserve :-)

DeleteYou will know far more than me about this practice and you might want to comment on Brian's point below?
Lesley
Not sure about this, if you consider the people who would go down this route it could be an improvement, remember you are not comparing it to taking the dog to the vets for an injection but to the chap who ties the dog up and uses a 12 bore.
ReplyDeleteBrian
DeleteThe 12 bore might be a more efficient weapon at actually dispatching the wretched dog. You don't have to know what you are doing to arm yourself with a bolt gun and set out to destroy unwanted greyhounds - you just have to own the dog. It seems that Vet's are seeing too many botched jobs so a ban seems preferable to me.
Lesley
And at least you need a licence for a 12-bore so someone might take an interest in what you're using it for - I believe that any cretin can get a bolt gun.
ReplyDeleteIs a humane death too much to ask for these hounds? It's the very least if you ask me.

I disagree with all this greyhound abuse. However I used to be a slaughterman and have used a bolt gun to dispatch 10's of thousands of animal's. Not once did I ever have to take a second hit. I think compared to other methods it's very efficient, instant and not difficult to train someone to do properly. The aim point is very easy to visually map.
ReplyDeleteAs for not needing a licence. Not sure about that. But given any other less effective method is easily available where's the real argument in that?
You certainly wouldn't need a licence for a pole axe and that is much harder to aim with horrid results.
I think that Vet's have seen too many Greyhounds that have been horribly injured by incompetent users of bolt guns. You are a dog lover and I guess you wouldn't choose this end for your dogs would you?
DeleteIt seems that the racing/breeding industry has elements that have a cavalier attitude to animal welfare, the dog isn't even worth the cost of a humane end...
Lesley
This truly is an appalling act of animal cruelty I really hope this petition gains support and puts an end to such horrible acts.
